LOVR™ by Revoltech — material summary
LOVR™ is a plant-based, plastic-free material developed by Revoltech, a TU Darmstadt spin-off in Germany. It is made primarily from European industrial hemp agricultural residues—by-products of hemp cultivation that would otherwise be left in the fields—combined with natural additives including waxes, pigments and bio-based glues. The current production version is described by revoltech as 60% hemp fibre and 99% bio-based, with certification under the USDA BioPreferred® Programme.
It is suitable for fashion applications (small accessories mainly) and also positioned as structured inlay for leather goods
Material composition and environmental profile
LOVR™ is designed as a single-layer material and contains:
The hemp fibres are sourced from traceable European agricultural residue streams, primarily from industrial hemp grown for seed production. According to Revoltech, using these residues does not require additional agricultural land or resources.
The material has a reported cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of 2.54 kg CO₂e/m², which is much lower comparing any conventional leather materials. Revoltech also reports that LOVR™ fully broke down within 320 days in a natural green-waste composting trial at the Botanical Garden Darmstadt. The company explicitly notes that this result was observed under natural composting conditions and is not certification under EN 13432.
Performance
LOVR™ is designed as a durable material for real product applications. The latest published test data include:
For a sample of 1mm thick with ~1000 g/m2
The results are reported by Revoltech as tests conducted under standardised conditions on material from the latest industrial production run.
Processing and applications
LOVR™ is designed to work with existing industrial production equipment and machinery, reducing the need for manufacturers to make significant changes to their production processes.
The material can be:
Circularity
LOVR™ has been designed with end-of-life considerations in mind. Its single-layer structure enables recycling, and the company reports biodegradation under active composting conditions.
The important distinction is that LOVR™ is not intended to biodegrade during normal product use. According to revoltech, degradation requires appropriate conditions involving heat, moisture and microbial activity. This is an important feature for a durable product material: the material is designed to remain stable during use but can break down under suitable end-of-life conditions.
